Trying to develop a Collapsible Soundproof box. Is there a market for this product?
Hi, I’m currently working on developing a product idea for a class. The product idea is a collapsible soundproof system that is targeted for musicians who live in apartments. Imagine a soundproof cubicle with a roof and soundproof panels as the walls. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the idea? Thanks. - Jon, Trombone player
1. Could you please rank the following attributes in regard to this product from most important to least important:
A. Cost of the product
B. Ability to easily disassemble the “box” and store it
C. The amount of sound prevented from escaping the “box”
D. The sound quality inside the “box”.
2. Would you be willing to pay $600.00 or more for the ability to practice in your apartment without disturbing neighbors?
3. Any other ideas or comments about the product?
1. C. B. A. D.
2. 600 for a product like this is more than reasonable.
3. If this idea works out, think of making a heavier duty, but still collapsible sound proof box too. I know that at my high school and other high schools, this would be a valuable item, especially for smaller rooms and temporary practice areas. Also, if it is quick and simple to assemble it, a teacher could increase the amount of sound boxes in a room on practice days, and decrease the amount when more room is needed for a group of people. Just an idea. But I do hope this works out, I would LOVE to own something like this.
Also, you could consider lighting and air/temperature control systems inside the box if you wanted t get fancy.

Dear Jon,
This is a fantastic idea! If you actually succeed in making this product, it would benefit millions of musicians everywhere! This item has alot of potential in practical use. I support this idea and encourage you to keep working on it.

Yes. $600 is a hefty price, but with musician related products you generally get what you pay for. If it was made of good quality materials, it would be an investment, but definitely worth the price for any musician who needs or wants to practice without disturbing their neighbors.

What type of sound proofing materials would you use to make this product?
Frame: Wood or plastic?
Padding: Foam or carpet?
Collapsing Mechanism: Hinges or parts with grooves that fit together?
This is a special project, so I might suggest asking help from people who design studios, or an architecture or interior design major. Otherwise, there is plenty of information on the internet. Google "sound proofing industry". I hope that helps.
