new to tabs, need help
hello all,
I just started using this site and am having trouble understanding how to read the tabs. like what do the dashes indicate and the number following the note? c2 a2 e3 -e2 e3 -e2 e2 c2 a2 e3 -e2 e3 -e2 e2
c2 a2 e3 -e2 e3 c2 a2
take that for example. What do the dashes in front of e mean? and what is the e2, e3
yeah that was a great start for me and is much appreciated. If you have any other pointers on ska trombone that would be most helpful as im going to be trying out for a well known ska band in the area towards the end of march
My band started in late November and we're just getting to recording now. ^^;
Are they requiring anything? You might want to be practicing more in terms of tone and style than the actual songs you're playing. You have to have energy in ska; being just technically proficient doesn't fly, at least not in my opinion.
first off i'd love to hear some recordings from you guys once you get them done. Im always expanding my ska collection. As for the band i'm auditioning for they didnt really require anything. Its more of the 2 tone style than 3rd wave. They told me to just get a couple of their songs under my belt but i'm not the best at trying to learn songs by ear. any advice?
Yeah, unless you have tabs for them, learning songs by ear is PAINFUL. Our band just tabbed out all of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Skambat is on its way soon ^^; I'm proud because I not only figured out the part for trombone BY EAR with my bassist's help, but I also transposed it for alto/tenor/trumpet.
and sure, help us get the word out about us haha

+ = Sharp / #
- = Flat / b
The 2's and 3's are how many octaves the note in question is away from the root note. Let's decode -e2.
-e2
The hyphen/minus sign indicates that the note is flat. Thus, the E is an Eb. The 2 indicates that it's an octave above your root E, or basically the lowest E you play. From playing the music, you can pretty much tell how high it is if the number is wrong / you read it wrong.
I hope I helped
I'm fluent in classical, jazz, and ska trombone, since 2004.
