my favoriete reed so far is the rico jazz selects, they have a weird hardness scale, and i just switched to them so i'm not sure which hardness works best for me yet i've been using a 2H but they are too soft and i keep killing the high notes with them.

I used to use a lot of ricos, but it's like using a student model sax, good, but one day you need to move up. Rico Royals are good, almost even with Vandorens. I've recently got into a new brand I found called Zonda, I had never heard of it before, but I like them, my friend (who uses Zondas for alto and clarinet) and I are using 4.5 T's right now, you can get 5's, but you have to order them in special. I also love Plasticover reeds, I seem to be able to play so much louder and still keep my tone with them, I use 3 1/2-4 Plasticovers (Plasticover is made by rico I believe). I always keep a plastic one handy too, they're reliable because they are not made of cane, but entirely plastic (some sort of polymix I'm sure, but we'll say plastic for now) they are clear and you don't have to wet them, they get warm from playing and loosen up. They are expensive (about $20 a piece, but they can last a few years). For me it all depends on what I'm playing at the time, for classical, zonda as high as I can get, for jazz, plasticover 4, or rico as high as I can get, for ska, I've found that I like the Plasticovers best, but most people might prefer the completely plastics, maybe a lower level too 2 1/2 plactic will wil you a brassier sound if you over blow a little, a sax sound only heard in ska (and some harp bop). Where can you get a 6? I'd be interested in a Tenor and an Alto, and I know my friend would take a 6 clarinet and probably an alto too.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about the ricos, it's just it's hard to find anything else around here. The 6s are at this shop that this old couple own. It's the only place I've ever seen them. The shop rips people off though and stuff. Went through hell before I finally got my sax.

Oh, a ma & pa outlet? Or something similar? If you're getting ripped off that sucks, if I was out there, I'd still buy at least one 6, just to have played it. Too bad it took so long with your sax, but at least you got it.

Yeah. They sent me two wrong saxes telling me that they were the right ones. Oh well, I do have the right one now. Yeah its kinda like the ma and pa thing.

vandoren zz's in a 3 for jazz and ska,
vandoren traditional french filed also in a 3 for concert band,

also, the plasticovers are still made of cane, they just have a "plastic cover" hence the name. there are full synthetic reeds out there though.

i found this on the rico website and thought it was pretty cool

Oh, ya, sorry, I guess I may have caused come confusion there. I was talking about plasticovers, which are (like m0ntekarl01 said) made of cane, but coated (covered) in plastic, but then jumped right into talking about plastics (which was my way of saying full synthetic reeds). Sorry if that actually confused anyone.

I play the alto and I use Rico Royal 3.5 (although I'm able to play a 4, but it's a little past my level right now). I'm gradually working my way up.
